Haynes Galleries Adds N.C. Wyeth’s “September Afternoon” to the Thomaston Maine Gallery’s Impressive American Realism Collection.

THOMASTON, Maine — Though N.C. Wyeth is best known for his illustration work, landscape painting was his passion, and there is no finer example than his 1916 oil on canvas “September Afternoon.” In a letter to his mother, Wyeth said he would submit it to the country’s leading exhibits as an attempt to “debut into the legitimate field of painting.”

Clearly, it worked. “September Afternoon” won the Copeland Prize for Best Painting at the 1916 Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts show. The painting, which has been in private collections since its creation, has been exhibited only a handful of times.

This is a rare opportunity to view — and perhaps own — one of N.C. Wyeth’s personally driven works. Haynes Galleries features 19th, 20th and 21st century American Realism, with galleries in Thomaston, Maine, and Franklin, Tennessee.
