Burton Silverman's Art Students League of New York Workshop:
"The Figure: Portrait & Pattern" December 5-9, 2011

The first class in this workshop will require the student to make a finished drawing study as a classic preparation for developing a painting. The drawing will be used to anticipate painting and compositional problems as well as to study formal sculptural relationships in rendering the figure in a realist manner. The first session will also include a drawing demonstration by Mr. Silverman to illustrate the salient issues he wishes to emphasize. Painting from the model will be a clothed figure to emphasize using clothing and patterned shapes to make a more complex figure painting. The larger aesthetic goals of selective interpretation in rendering the figure will also be investigated.
Burt Silverman has exhibited in galleries and museums since 1956. He has had 34 solo shows, including several retrospective exhibitions at the Butler Institute of American Art and the Brigham Young Museum of Art, at the Sherwin Miller Museum in Tulsa, OK and a recently concluded retrospective at the Hofstra University Museum in NY. He has also exhibited in countless group and invitational exhibits centering on Realism and its revival. His work has been shown in international venues such as the Mexico City Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Art in London. He has won 33 prizes, including nine major awards from the National Academy Museum. In 2002 he received an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and the Gold Medal from the Portrait Society of America.
